The Bowen Technique – HOW DOES IT WORK?

By releasing stress at a very deep level, via its calming effect on the Autonomic Nervous System, Bowen sets the scene for the body to heal itself. In contrast to many other hands-on therapies, Bowen does not attempt to force the body to change; rather it asks the body to recognise and make the changes necessary to bring it back to homeostasis (physiological equilibrium). It is not massage, and does not involve deep tissue manipulation, it is extremely gentle and as such can be used on anyone, from newborn babies to the elderly, end of life, long term illnesses etc.

The Bowen Technique – It’s not just about aches and pains.

Because Bowen is so gentle and uses the lightest of touches, it is quite a unique experience and it is one of the loveliest ways to simply just relax and unwind.

Clients regularly comment on how peaceful they feel and how their bodies quickly respond to the gentle sensations, giving them a deep sense of calmness and peace. Often this results in the client gently falling asleep during the session.

Clients sometimes later report that they were energised or felt empowered following Bowen, that their minds had cleared, they felt more decisive and full of life. Many commenting that “it was like something just clicked”, “fell into place” or “unscrambled”.

Bowen For Mums and Babies –

One of the wonderful things about The Bowen Technique (Bowen Therapy) is that it can treat anyone from a newborn baby to the elderly or infirm. This therapy has no limitations because of age or fragility.

Bowen therapy can help improve and maintain health and relaxation for both mother and baby. Many expectant mums, and dads, discover Bowen Therapy during pregnancy and continue to seek help and advice from their Bowen practitioner for themselves and their children for many years.

(I used Bowen therapy on my daughter during the home birth of my youngest grandson. I also “Bowened” him during my first cuddles, and still do on a regular basis. All my grandchildren love having Bowen. And yes the midwives had a little Bowen too)

An initial set of 3 – 4 treatments is recommended, scheduled 5-10 days apart.

A fixed rule of Bowen is that it should not be mixed with other therapies. The treatment is, in effect, asking the body to undertake a process of repair and so should be allowed to do so without interruption or contradiction. A client will be asked not to have other forms of physical or energetic therapy whilst receiving Bowen and to leave a period of a week either side.

This remarkable technique can be quick and effective in helping the following:-

  • Muscular and skeletal problems in neck, shoulder, hip, knees, ankle and back, including sciatica.
  • Frozen shoulder, tennis and golf elbow, R.S.I. and carpal tunnel.
  • Whiplash and sports injuries.
  • Problems with posture and body alignment.
  • Migraine and recurring headaches.
  • Bell’s Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and the difficulties suffered by stroke victims.
  • Respiratory, bronchial and related symptoms such as hayfever and asthma.
  • Digestive problems such as IBS.
  • Arthritis.
  • Hormonal, pregnancy and fertility problems.
  • Great for Expectant Mums and Baby, Colic, relaxation and sleep, unsettled babies, etc.
  • Depression, Anxiety, PTSD.
  • Stress management, ME, fatigue and sleep problems.
  • AND much, much more.

Bowen can be of assistance in many cases of emotional stress, where relaxation is a prime factor in easing pain and anxiety. It is also often a great help in improving the quality of life for those who are terminally ill.

The Bowen Technique is not a substitute for medical treatment.
